Main Treatment Options

Lumpectomy

Also called breast conserving surgery. The surgeon removes the portion of your breast that contains the DCIS.

Lumpectomy with Radiation

In addition to breast conserving surgery, you undergo radiation treatment. Beams of high energy are used to kill possible leftover DCIS cells in your breast.

Mastectomy

The surgeon removes the entire breast that contains the DCIS.

One additional option that is not currently offered as a standard treatment is active monitoring: there is no upfront surgery; instead, you have regular follow-up screenings to watch for any changes. This option is being tested in ongoing clinical trials.

Additional Treatment (optional and patient eligibility varies)

Endocrine Therapy

Depending on your DCIS type, you may be eligible for endocrine therapy in addition to active monitoring or surgery. You will need to take a pill daily for 5-10 years.
